Meyer Named 2010 Finalist: America’s Best Young Entrepreneurs

Bloomberg’s Businessweek.com named John T. Meyer, a Brookings, SD native, as a finalist in their sixth annual top 25 promising entrepreneurs roundup.

Meyer started his first company to do search engine marketing at age 22 from his dorm room at Luther College in Iowa. After going to work for Accenture (ACN) in Minneapolis, he took a buyout in 2009 to return to his native South Dakota and start 9 Clouds, an online marketing consultancy.

Meyer’s goal: help organizations that aren’t very web savvy get online. “Especially here in the Midwest, there are a lot of people who have yet to explore the power of social media,” he says.  To this end, 9 Clouds offers individual consulting on how to choose and utilize the most effective online tools and has created a product called the Yellow Sandbox to teach apprehensive business owners how to get started online. Meyer used a $15,000 economic development grant for seed money and launched the company in June 2009.

Today, 9 Clouds speaks at conferences around the world and has a staff of five including his older brother, Scott. Based in Sioux Falls and Brookings, 9 Clouds works with more than 15 active clients, including retailers, professional firms, and colleges such as South Dakota State University and Lehigh University.

Although 9 Clouds has grown rapidly in the past year, they still find joy working with businesses of all sizes. “We’ve helped everyone from small town artists to the European Union but are always looking for new opportunities and organizations of any size to help,” said Meyer.

The public can vote for the business they think holds the most potential, and the top five companies will be announced Oct. 28. To cast a vote for most promising entrepreneur,
